Discover the Impact of Hindu Advocacy in Las Vegas

Speaker in traditional attire engaging diverse audience in library, promoting cultural understanding and education.

As I stood in a bustling room at the Enterprise Library in Las Vegas, I felt a profound sense of pride and anticipation. We were celebrating CoHNA’s five-year anniversary—a milestone that marked not just our achievements, but also the beginning of a new chapter in Hindu advocacy here in Nevada. The room was filled with a vibrant mix of students, parents, professionals, community leaders, and even representatives from Senator Jacky Rosen’s office. It was clear that we were all united in our mission to create a robust voice for Hindus across the state.

The event, like many organized by CoHNA, had a strong focus on youth empowerment. I had the privilege of witnessing the recognition of Abhimanyu Gupta, a remarkable youth leader who has already driven significant change. Listening to students share their experiences of misrepresentations of Hinduism in classrooms was both eye-opening and inspiring. One high school student bravely shared, “When I raise my hand to correct the teacher, I feel like I’m speaking for millions of people. That’s too heavy for one kid to carry—but that’s our reality.” Another participant emphasized, “It’s not just about defending ourselves. Advocacy means making sure the next generation of kids doesn’t go through what we went through.”

A moment that truly touched my heart was when a Hindu parent expressed, “We grew up being told to keep our heads down and stay quiet. These kids are teaching us that silence is no longer an option.” This intergenerational dialogue highlighted the essence of our gathering—advocacy is about preserving cultural dignity today and nurturing civic leaders for tomorrow.

Throughout the event, we engaged in candid conversations about identity and the challenges of growing up Hindu in America. Yet, what stood out just as much were the stories of triumph—instances where strategic advocacy and thoughtful pushback led to positive change. From altering laws to protect those displaying Swastikas to ensuring parental visitation rights, and students championing changes in their schools, we celebrated each victory.

As we looked to the future, we were filled with hope and determination. The next five years hold the promise of building upon the foundation we’ve established, aiming for even greater impact. I invite you to join the CoHNA movement and be part of this transformative journey.
