Perception is indispensable, but it is not automatically correct. The familiar rope-and-snake error shows why conditions matter: poor light can turn a rope into an apparent snake. The correction does not require abandoning perception. It requires better perception, a closer inspection, and the integration of further evidence.

Inference extends knowledge beyond what is immediately seen.
