Your astrologer calls an approaching transit difficult, an app displays a healthy Sarvashtakavarga score, and someone else reduces your birth date to a single digit. All three may use the language of numbers, but they are not answering the same question. Before you postpone a ceremony, reject a job, or assume that a year will be unlucky, identify which method produced the claim.
Ashtakavarga does not make a decision for you. It gives you a structured way to judge how much support a particular planet may find while transiting a particular sign. Used with the natal chart, dasha-bhukti and practical facts, it can sharpen your timing. Used alone, it turns a helpful indicator into false precision.
First identify which kind of number you are being shown

In Jyotisha, numbers usually describe an ordered relationship. The framework includes nine grahas, twelve rashis, twenty-seven nakshatras with 108 padas, and a sixty-year samvatsara cycle. Tithi measures the lunar day, vara identifies the weekday, nakshatra locates the Moon within the lunar-mansion cycle, and dasha systems organize longer periods of planetary activation. These numbers are coordinates within time, not free-floating lucky charms.
This distinction matters because the label “astro-numerology” is often applied to two different practices. One is the numerical architecture already built into Jyotisha: rashis, nakshatras, dashas, planetary motion and Ashtakavarga. The other is a later stream of ank-jyotish that associates single digits with grahas: 1 with the Sun, 2 with the Moon, 3 with Jupiter, 4 with Rahu, 5 with Mercury, 6 with Venus, 7 with Ketu, 8 with Saturn and 9 with Mars. Birth-date and name totals in that system may support personal reflection, but they are not substitutes for a natal and transit analysis.
You can tell which method you have received by asking what had to be calculated. If a reading was produced entirely from your name or date digits, without planetary positions or a twelve-sign table, it is not an Ashtakavarga judgment. If it shows a separate sign-by-sign score for a transiting planet and an aggregate score for every sign, it is working with the two main Ashtakavarga layers.
Panchang and Choghadiya belong to another layer again. Panchang factors such as tithi, nakshatra and vara help select a suitable date after you have decided that an action is sound. Regional Choghadiya divisions, including Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char as well as more difficult intervals, narrow the time of day. They are short-range electional filters; they do not replace the natal chart or determine whether a major decision is wise.
Read BAV and SAV as two different layers

Ashtakavarga literally means a “group of eight.” Its rules translate natal planetary relationships into bindus and rekhas across the twelve signs. A bindu represents a supportive contribution under the relevant rule, while a rekha records its absence. Those underlying marks are combined into sign scores. The value of the method lies in this visible arithmetic: you can inspect the table behind an interpretation instead of accepting a vague statement that a transit is simply good or bad.
| Layer | What it measures | Question it helps answer | What it cannot decide alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bhinnashtakavarga, or BAV | A separate twelve-sign support profile for each planet | How readily might this particular planet express its transit results in this sign? | Which life topic will be activated, whether the natal chart promises the result, or whether the action is prudent |
| Sarvashtakavarga, or SAV | The combined BAV contribution of the seven classical planets in each sign | How supportive or resistant is the sign’s broader transit environment? | How the individual transiting planet will behave, which event will occur, or when the event becomes active |
BAV and SAV answer related but non-identical questions. A relatively strong SAV score describes the general terrain of a sign. It does not erase a weak BAV score for the planet you are actually judging. Conversely, a strong planetary BAV may give that planet room to work even when the sign’s aggregate environment is mixed. You need both layers.
You also need to translate the sign into a life area. An Ashtakavarga score belongs to a rashi, while the natal lagna determines which bhava that rashi occupies. A favorable score cannot tell you whether the relevant subject is work, family, learning, health, partnership or another matter until the rashi-bhava relationship is established. This is why a list of SAV values without the natal chart is descriptive but incomplete.
Higher does not mean morally good, guaranteed or effortless. Lower does not mean sinful, doomed or impossible. A score estimates supportive bandwidth within one technique. The planet’s natal dignity, functional role, aspects, yogas, strength and current dasha still shape what that bandwidth can carry.
Use this eight-step workflow before a major decision

A disciplined reading moves from the broadest activation to the narrowest date. Reversing that order is a common mistake: people find an attractive muhurta first and then use it to justify a decision whose underlying conditions have never been examined.
- Write the actual decision. Replace “Is this a good period?” with a testable question such as “Should I accept this role under these written terms?” or “Which of these two already-viable dates is better for the ceremony?” A vague question produces a vague prediction.
- Confirm the chart being used. The reading should be based on one internally consistent natal chart. Ask to see the lagna, planetary positions and the twelve-sign BAV and SAV tables rather than only a final label.
- Identify the operative dasha and bhukti. These periods show which planetary themes have the strongest claim on the present chapter. If the period lords have little connection to the matter, a striking transit score may remain background rather than become a concrete event.
- Establish the relevant bhavas and grahas. Determine which houses govern the decision and what functional role the associated planets hold for the natal lagna. Do this before looking for a favorable number.
- Read the natal condition. Examine dignity, aspects, yogas and strength, including shadbala where that method is being used. Ashtakavarga modifies the transit judgment; it does not rewrite the natal chart.
- Check the transiting planet’s BAV. Locate the sign the planet is entering and read that sign in the planet’s own BAV table. This is the planet-specific layer.
- Check the same sign’s SAV. Now inspect the aggregate environment. Treat BAV and SAV as a pair, then compare them with the dasha and natal promise.
- Choose the date last. Once the decision survives the chart analysis and ordinary due diligence, use tithi, nakshatra, vara or an appropriate Choghadiya interval to refine the execution time. Record what you considered so that later outcomes can improve your judgment.
This sequence keeps each technique in its proper place: dasha-bhukti identifies the active period, rashi and bhava analysis identifies the field, BAV and SAV assess transit support, and Panchang factors refine the date. No single layer has to carry more certainty than it can support.
A worked example: Saturn during a professional change
Suppose you are considering a demanding new role while Saturn is crossing a sign connected with the relevant professional matters in your chart. Begin with the operative dasha-bhukti and the natal condition of Saturn and the career-related planets. Then check Saturn’s BAV score for the transit sign and that sign’s SAV.
If Saturn’s BAV is comparatively robust and the SAV is also healthy, Saturn’s demanding qualities may be easier to channel into disciplined consolidation, skill-building and gains that require sustained effort. That does not turn every offer into a good offer. It tells you that the period may have more capacity for structure, responsibility and long-term work if the natal and dasha layers agree.
If Saturn’s BAV is sparse and the sign’s SAV is weak, take the combination as a call for narrower commitments and stronger safeguards. Verify workload, reporting lines, compensation, debt exposure and exit terms. A staged transition may be more sensible than an abrupt resignation. This is not because a low score predicts one unavoidable event; it is because the numerical warning gives you a reason to reduce avoidable fragility.
Do not resign, borrow, invest, reject medical care or sign a binding agreement because of an Ashtakavarga score. Astrology does not verify a contract, diagnose an illness or calculate whether you can afford a loss. Use the relevant professional advice and real-world evidence for those questions, then let Jyotisha contribute context and timing.
Translate score combinations into proportionate action

Do not force every chart into one unexplained universal cutoff. Ask which calculation and interpretive baseline produced the displayed values, and compare the individual planet’s BAV with the SAV of the same sign. The four combinations below are decision postures, not event predictions.
| Planet’s BAV | Sign’s SAV | What to notice | Sensible response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparatively higher | Comparatively higher | The planet and the wider sign environment both show supportive capacity | Proceed when the dasha, natal promise and practical facts agree; do not increase risk merely because the scores look favorable |
| Comparatively higher | Comparatively lower | The planet has some room to act, but the surrounding terrain is mixed | Keep the objective focused, add time and financial buffers, and expect help in one area without assuming that every connected matter will flow smoothly |
| Comparatively lower | Comparatively higher | The general environment is supportive, but the specific transiting planet may still create friction | Prepare specifically for that planet’s responsibilities instead of treating the strong SAV as a blanket protection |
| Comparatively lower | Comparatively lower | Planet-specific and aggregate support are both limited | Reduce leverage and irreversibility, strengthen contingencies, and delay only when delay is practical and independently justified |
The two tempting errors sit at opposite ends of this table. A favorable stack can become permission for overconfidence: taking debt, ignoring a weak contract or assuming that effort is unnecessary. An unfavorable stack can become fatalism: abandoning a duty, refusing a viable opportunity or treating difficulty as punishment. Both errors surrender judgment to a number.
A Dharmic use of Jyotisha asks a better question: what conduct does this period require from you? Supportive conditions call for disciplined use of opportunity. Resistant conditions call for patience, restraint, preparation and ethical clarity. Neither condition suspends dharma, free will or responsibility.
Key takeaways: five questions that test a reading
- Which system produced the number? Is it a name or birth-date total, a Panchang factor, a planet’s BAV, or the sign’s SAV?
- What is active now? Which dasha and bhukti are operating, and how do their planets connect with the matter you are considering?
- What does the natal chart permit? Which rashi, bhava, graha, dignity, aspect or yoga gives the score a concrete subject?
- Can you inspect the calculation? Ask for the twelve-sign BAV and SAV tables and the exact transit sign, not merely a verdict such as “excellent” or “dangerous.”
- What facts remain outside astrology? Contracts, affordability, health evidence, legal duties, consent and family responsibilities must be evaluated on their own terms.
If a reading cannot answer the first four questions, treat it as a prompt for reflection rather than a basis for action. If it discourages the fifth question, do not rely on it for a consequential decision.
Calendrical practices differ across Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh communities, and those traditions should not be collapsed into one theology. They nevertheless share a recognizable respect for time as a setting for intention, observance, restraint and service. That orientation offers the right standard for astro-numerology: timing should refine responsible action, not replace it.
Your next step is simple. Ask for the planet-specific BAV, the SAV of the transit sign and the current dasha-bhukti. Beside them, write the real-world conditions that must be true for your choice to remain sound. Select an auspicious date only after the decision clears both tests.
