Look closely at Surya’s clothing. The deity is represented in high boots and a belted tunic, features often associated by art historians with Central Asian modes of dress. The important point is not that the image ceases to be Indian. It is that Odisha’s sacred art could absorb a cosmopolitan visual vocabulary and make it serve a distinctly Kalinga conception of Surya.

The erotic mithuna and maithuna figures require the same contextual discipline. Seen in isolation, they can be reduced either to embarrassment or sensation. Within Kalinga temple aesthetics, they participate in ideas of fertility, auspiciousness, generation, and the sustaining abundance of creation.
